There are a number of types of dental alloys that can be used to make all-metal dental crowns. Each one has its own specific composition, and therefore its own unique physical properties, that makes it best suited for certain types of applications.

When a crown is called monolithic this means it is fabricated in full contour from a single block of material. The weakest link in traditional PFM’s and other ceramic restorations is the porcelain layer over the substructure. In many cases the porcelain can chip or fracture from the substructure and ultimately cause the restoration to fail. Monolithic crowns have no such weakness. We also offer layered crowns. Though the monolithic press is stronger than a layered one you can achieve even better esthetics with a layered crown. IPS e.max layered offers the high translucence and lifelike esthetics you look for in an anterior crown.

The cutback and layering technique is a step-by-step process for using the IPS e.max Press lithium disilicate material not only to precisely and predictably deliver the patient’s desired shade and internal effects, but also to support proper soft-tissue response. The technique results in the creation of natural-looking optical effects by enameling over the imparted characteristics to return the restoration to full contour and blend seamlessly with the natural dentition.

All Ceramics (1) Occlusal Zirconia
The use of Zirconia is driven by improved esthetics, biocompalibility, and durability as compared to PFM. First, since Zirconium crowns are milled from a chunk of crystal, Zirconium crowns are definitely more robust at least 5 times than porcelain crowns that chip and break. Second, esthetic effects of zirconia are also superior than PFM because there is no metal to show through the ceramic, and no unsightly black lines at the gingival. Third, Zirconia material is well known for being biocompatible. It means it is safe to stay within your mouth for a long time. There is no need to worry about any adverse reactions from your body because it is not rejected by the human body.
